In Which The Mystery Deepens

July 11, 2008 by Mike

Somewhere In Italy

I've left lovely San Marino behind, a country that I seriously considered sticking in one of my panniers and taking with me for the rest of the trip. It's pretty; it's also so unnecessary and implausible and.. and.. all the better for it.

Also, 24 hours away from Italy has done me good. I'm reinvigorated. I'm refreshed. I don't hate all Italians on sight.

I've enjoyed today, riding off towards the sunset in readiness for my date. Although rendezvous might be a better word for it.

I'm meeting a very dear and very old friend. (We're all old these days.)

I've worked with Kathy. I've shared a flat with Kathy. But I've never been on a short weekend break with her riding motorbikes through Tuscany, the Apennines and down to the Adriatic, where (touch wood) we'll spend an intimate evening with a musical legend who is also a mean short-order chef.

In fact, as we both came to biking in our dotage, we've never ridden together. I'm not at all used to riding with other bikes, so that's going to be a lot of fun.

And.. ahhh, but that would be spoiling it.

Let me just say, mysteriously, that I'm hoping to let Kathy do the hard work and write up the events of the next couple of days. I'm not besidetheseaside, after all, so I reckon I can get away with it. (There's a precedent. When I visited Phil in Berlin 18 months ago he kindly updated this site for me.)

And, because I know this will will have you jumping out of your seats in expectation, I should point out that Kathy's report won't be available for at least a couple of weeks due to newspaper scheduling. There.. that's got your attention. I'll keep you posted.

*I'm taking advantage of this sidetrip with Kathy to reach a Ryanair airport. I'll be flying back to the UK to see my Pa, wash my clothes and doubtless lose my tan. Back in Italy and besidetheseaside on 24 July. Thanks for yr patience.*
