In Which I Twitch

Saintes Maries de la Mer

I managed a decent night's sleep, which was more than I expected.

On one side of the tent, an Anglo-French couple who'd spent the entire evening shouting at each other. They were sleeping in their car. Chavs.

On the other, an Italian family. The daughter was practising her scales on the saxamophone most of the evening. She's not very good yet, but by the sound of it she only picked the instrument up for the first time this morning.

Another hot and sunny start to the day.

To celebrate, I set off to take pictures of some gorgeous birds, hopefully without them noticing.

.. gorgeous birds of the feathered variety, I hasten to add.

A 90-minute trip on a tourist boat up the mouth of the Petit Rhone. I saw white horses, worried bulls, a heron-y type thing and another bird which was quite colourful. I'm not a natural as describing the natural world, am I?

And in the afternoon, a slow ride through this watery, low-lying country to Arles. It's like the Norfolk Broads with sunshine. Which makes Arles like Norwich with uncounted Roman remains -- a circus, amphitheatre, the remains of bathhouses and the forum -- Renaissance and Classical quartiers -- and 300 drawings and paintings completed here by Vincent Van Gogh. None of them still here -- who can afford them?
