In Which I Pay A Visit To The Holy Family, Of All People

Barcelona

I'm not getting tired of Barcelona: hope you're not.

Another brilliant Barcelona day -- the Sagrada Familia is worth the hype.. as architecture, as icon, as achievement. Part of the attraction is that it is famously unfinished. I don't suppose the tourist board will ever let them cap the final spire with another ten-foot tall glass strawberry.. or even a cross. But for now -- it's worth a long, close look.

There are lots of posters around town for a forthcoming concert featuring tribute bands playing the hits of, amongst others, Pink Floyd, Janis Joplin, the Beatles, the Stones and the Doors - and a David Bowie tribute act called Aladdin Spiders.

Can anyone PLEASE explain why he doesn't call himself Aladdin Spain?

Talking of gigs I wouldn't pay much money to see.. I paid €19 to go and see Willie Nile tonight. No offence, Willie, but I'm too old for this kind of thing. And you're old enough to be my dad.

This is the first time since I was at skool that I've been to a gig where someone was wearing a Marillion t-shirt. Perhaps I've just been lucky.

Curious that a man who, even his mum would agree, is a better songwriter than singer, finished his set with songs by the Clash, Dylan, the Ramones ("I Wanna Be Sedated", which one of the Spanish fans requested as "I Wanna Be Cremated" -- is his English really bad? Or really good?), Nick Lowe and Neil Young.

Did I say "better songwriter"? Boyohboy, I realised very quickly that every time Willie headed up that lonesome railroad track, it wouldn't be long before he ain't never comin' back. If the sky was blue, it could only be blue for me and for you. His own songs were so slow and so clearly signposted I considered writing them myself, while he was still on the first verse, getting them copyrighted and then asking the bouncers to arrest him for nicking my material.

Every one else in the crowd went wild. They loved it.

I've found something wrong with Barcelona: there are 150 Willie Nile fans. Ach but heck, just because I have brilliant taste in music, doesn't mean that everyone can. Where would be all the fun in that?
