In Which I Find A Use For My Chewing Gum

April 12, 2008 by Mike

Cullera

Sunbathed. Checked email. Drank.. coffee.

It's a quiet place.

And in the afternoon, rode in to Valencia -- 40km north -- to go to the footie: Valencia were awful: Koeman fuera!

Valencia, the city: this is of necessity a non-scientific survey, but I guesstimate that between 42-45% of the population of Valencia are *ridiculously* attractive women between the ages of 18-35. I say this having compared notes with Kai, who I met in the campsite yesterday and who I hooked up with in Valencia this afternoon to see the game.

Kai lived in Norwich for six months. His dad used to be the masseur for M.S.V. Duisberg.

Valencia, the football team: laughably awful. How much fun, to see their manager Ronald Koeman suffering, after what he did to England.

The stadium, the Mestalla, is almost obscenely tall and steep: Kai and I take a good ten minutes to walk up from ground level to our seats in the Grada del Mar (recommended) (though not if you're drunk, as were.. surprise, surprise.. the stag party from Durham seated behind us.)

The fans hate Koeman, so they're not all bad. But then one man sitting close to us unleashed a torrent of racist abuse at the Racing Santander striker Mohammed Tchite. (A name made for abuse, I know..) I was nervous -- Spain has a terrible reputation when it comes to racism in football.. so it gives me great pleasure to relate that everyone within distance of this idiot turned and stared when he laid in to Tchite. There were no stewards or police, so expulsion wasn't an option, but he realised everyone was staring and shut up.

God knows how my freshly sticky chewing gum got onto his seat at half-time: it's going to be next to impossible trying to get that out of his trousers.

Riding home to Cullera from the game in the dark: through the broad streets and avenues of Valencia, then up and down a couple of motorways trying to find the right road.. and on and on under a silver moon. Fantastic.. especially the urban roads, weaving between speeding traffic, white-lining to the front at traffic lights, buzzing past monumental Valencia, racing scooters (too easy) and dodging Volvo drivers (always dangerous). Fanbloodytastic.
