In Which It's A Tough Life And No Mistake

Gijon

Route: Unquera - Llanes - Ribadesella - Villaviciosa - Gijon

I'm thinking of starting a support group for certain places around Europe that suffer an absence of British tourists. Try as they might, they just can't seem to attract visitors from the UK or Ireland. Or the USA. Or any English-speaking countries.

This hotel in Northwest Germany will be a founder member:-

and so will this beach which I rode past today (without stopping for a swim):-

Pimiango sits at the end of an incredibly curvy road - I counted 24 turns in 1.7 miles.. which says alot about me, doesn't it? I mean, that I bothered to count? Llanes is another largely-prserved mediaeval town, finely attuned to meet tourist demands for 'cute'. Ribadesella is more relaxed - a marina, a panoramic outlook and a beach. It's been sunny down here on the coast but rainclouds have hogged the Picos de Europa. The journey through this picturesque mountain range, that stops just short of the sea, "left me ruddy as owt" according to a far better travel writer than me.

All gorgeous. I could live here. And the road that threads west to Gijon -- the N-632 -- stupendous. Gorgeous towns. Gorgeous roads. Gorgeous mountains. Gorgeous weather.

It's a tough life.
